Let AI Take Your Order in the Drive-Thru

“Would you like fries with that?” – ChatGPT asked.

Much like many others I’m sure, my first ever job when I was in high school was working for the local Red Rooster nearby. Despite the fact that Red Rooster was the “fast food at home” option for many kids who really wanted Maccas, working in the fast food industry at such a young age was extremely beneficial and was a good introduction into the working world. I’m sure most people found their feet for the workforce starting is businesses such as retail, fast food/hospitality, or even by working in local grocery stores.

But sadly as time goes on and technology evolves we begin to find ourselves creating problems that will remove jobs. Even the ones that allow children to get their first bit of experience to add to their resume. A TikTok has gone viral online of an Australian Hungry Jacks using an AI assistant to replace its service attendant in the drive-thru. You can check out the video below.

The response from this has been substantially against this change. With AI slowly taking over more and more roles in workplaces and minimising workforces to save costs it’s starting to become harder and harder to even hold on to entry-level positions. Remember when self-serve checkouts became a thing at Coles and Woolworths? Many people were furious over this and the cutting of jobs it will bring, I fear that similarly, this will be a situation that if not fought against now will become a new normal within a few years.

Look, I hate AI. Just going to be honest about it. It has its uses in making trivial tasks take less time so I can work on more important things which is a great use of it as a tool. I use AI to spell check these articles in fact, but I know for a fact many places use AI to write entire articles for them which really urks me. But AI slowly taking over entire jobs is a dangerous road to walk, because how long until it takes more and more jobs from people in this already hard-to-survive cost of living crisis.
