When you have all the money in the world. You can do a "few" cooky things and get the attention of the world.
Elon Musk has recently done this, but strapping his Red Tesla car to the SpaceX test rocket bound for Mars. Why? Because! He's eccentric billionaire Elon Musk!
The launch wasn't just the whim of a mad man; it actually has some pretty significant ramifications for future space exploration. This was the first major test flight of the monster SpaceX rocket, Falcon Heavy.
The rocket is the most powerful currently in operation by a factor of 2 and is designed to carry supplies for future missions to the Moon and Mars.
Musk wasn't hugely optimistic the mission would be a success and when asked he gave it a 50/50 chance of success. He said "it is guaranteed to be exciting, one way or another."
Despite Musk's pessimism, the test went flawlessly.
Two recycled boosters performed simultaneous landings back on Earth, a third (brand new) booster touched down as planned on a platform 480kms offshore and the main rocket returned safely after reaching orbit.
Meanwhile..... Musk's Roadster is still on its way to Mars.
