A blow for a favourite Coffin Bay oyster farm…
For the first time in 20 years the Port Douglas harvesting area has been closed due to micro algae levels.
The South Australian Shellfish Quality Assurance Program closeing the area as a precaution, with PIRSA confirming the news yesterday.

We’re told the algae detected can be harmful to humans and the closure will run for at least two weeks, prohibiting the sale of oysters and vongole.
PIRSA’s general manager of food safety, Paul Dowsett says this is different to the month-long closure of farms back in November 2021.
