The federal electorate of Grey could soon be renamed O’Donoghue under new boundary changes.

The change would honour Aboriginal leader Dr Lowitja O’Donoghue, the first Indigenous nurse at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and first Indigenous Australian to address the United Nations General Assembly.

Her other accolades include playing an integral role in negotiations that led to federal native title legislation, and becoming the first Aboriginal person to have a building named after her at the Australian National University.

O’Donoghue died in 2024.

The AEC Redistribution Committee recommended the change following an anonymous submission, saying it was appropriate due to O’Donoghue’s connection to the APY Lands.

The current electorate of Grey was named in 1903 after colonial explorer Sir George Grey, who served as Governor of South Australia in 1840.

The Committee noted that he was born and died overseas and had limited connection to Australia.

The AEC is currently open for public consultation on the suggested change, which includes a boundary redistribution that could acquire the Playford Council.
