Kimba Council addresses nuclear waste facility trial

On Tuesday last week the Federal Court ruled in favour of the Barngarla people and judged the selection of Napandee for the National Radioactive Waste Management Facility was influenced by bias and pre-judgement.

Kimba Mayor Dean Johnson released a letter to the community on Friday, 21 July, to update residents on the topic.

Mayor Johnson acknowledged the positive and negative emotions in the community, with some happy about the outcome and others concerned about the future of Kimba without the new industry.

He says there’s confusion about what the court decision means for Kimba as the council hasn’t been briefed on the legal interpretation of the verdict.

In the absence of updates since the decision, the council assumes the government is still committed to establishing the nuclear waste facility.

Mayor Johnson says he’s dedicated to getting the best result for Kimba and will keep the community informed as the council learns more.
