In a major boost for conservation and regional tourism, South Australia’s Giant Australian Cuttlefish now have permanent protection enshrined in state law.
The Fisheries Management Amendment Bill passed late last month, locking in the long-standing fishing ban in the Northern Spencer Gulf.
The move means protections that were once temporary are now written into the Fisheries Management Act.

Whyalla Mayor Phill Stone welcomed the change, calling it great news for both the cuttlefish and the local community, with no changes to existing fishing rules or closures areas.
