Port Lincoln residents will be among the first in Australia to hear a test of the new national AusAlert emergency warning system.
A loud 10‑second siren will sound on mobile phones across the Port Lincoln area in June, as part of testing ahead of a nationwide rollout.
The system is designed to deliver faster and more reliable emergency warnings, including alerts for bushfires, severe weather and public safety threats, and will operate even when mobile networks are congested.
The test alert will be sent to all mobile phones within range and will clearly state it is only a test, with no action required.
The Federal Government says AusAlert is expected to be fully operational by October.
Residents are being reminded not to panic if they hear the siren during the test period.
