Local youth will gain skills and confidence at the newly opened Red Cross Youth Development Hub, launched in Port Lincoln yesterday, 7 February.

In the works since 2021, the inclusive space will provide 260 disengaged young people with retail and hospitality skills over two years.

Regional Services Manager Bec Cunningham says this will involve working in the new Red Cross Op Shop, opening in mid-March.

“This will mean that the young people that have gone through the retail training will be able to put their skills in a real-life environment, she says.

“We’re also doing a call-out for anyone within the Port Lincoln area that would like to come and volunteer and be a part of our Youth Development Hub to come down and have a chat.”

Ms Cunningham says there’s been great support from local partners, and she hopes to see upskilled youth stay in the region and give back to local employers.

“It’s an exciting space where we’re bringing together hospitality and retail to provide really amazing skills and experiences to our young people.

“Most importantly, it’s not about the skills that the young people take away to go into the workplace… it’s providing them a space so they can come and connect with peers.”
