Streaky Bay has been reclassified as a ‘very remote community’ under the Medicare classification.
The Modified Monash Model defines whether a location is metropolitan, rural, remote or very remote in regards to local health and aged care.
Following calls of concern from the community, Health Minister Mark Butler changed the town’s classification from MM6 to MM7.
The update now puts Streaky Bay into alignment with neighbouring communities in the ‘very remote’ category.
The reclassification is set to bring significant benefits to the region, including increased Medicare incentives, more support for aged care services and improved opportunities for attracting and retaining doctors.
Streaky Bay Mayor Travis Barber thanked Minister Butler for the decision, saying the reclassification will have a lasting impact on the community.
