Thousands Going Towards Koonalda Cave Protection

The Koonalda Cave on the Nullarbor Plain will share in more than $720,000 in grant money, going towards restoring and preserving some of Australia’s oldest cultural heritage sites in South Australia.


Set within the Nullarbor Wilderness Protection Area, Koonalda Cave is home to a number of ancient finger markings and unique archaeological deposits, providing evidence of Aboriginal life dating back more than 22,000 years.

$400,000 from the grant will go towards protecting and conserving Koonalda Cave, in partnership with local Aboriginal people and the South Australian Government.

Minister for the Environment and Water, Tanya Plibersek, said the grant will assist in protecting the caves by installing enhanced barriers and a state-of-the-art security system.
