Whyalla could host an AFL Gather Round match next year, if the Spencer Gulf Cities group are successful in lobbying the State Government.
At the group’s last meeting, the Whyalla, Port Pirie and Port Augusta mayors acknowledged the success of the round and discussed one of the three councils hosting matches each year.
The group resolved to send an expression of interest to the Premier and the Minister for Sport and Recreation, noting all three cities have well-equipped ovals and facilities, young residents could benefit from football clinics and fast travel arrangements could be put in place.
A submission will be sent to the Premier in the coming weeks.
