Whyalla’s adjusted Annual Business Plan and Budget for 2023-24 has been adopted, including a rate rise of 8.7 per cent – an increase equal to an additional $2.35 per week for the average household.

The increase aligns with Whyalla’s Eyre Peninsula neighbours, where rate rises between 7.9 and 11.5 per cent have been proposed.

Whyalla Mayor Phill Stone says extensive community consultation was undertaken over several months to reach this decision, and responses indicated most residents understood the rate rise was necessary to cover the Consumer Price Index (CPI) while ensuring no services were lost and Council debt was not increased.

Mayor Stone says this is the minimum increase the Council could implement without compromising day-to-day-services and major community projects.
