Shellfish producer Yumbah Aquaculture has paused harvesting in the Lower Eyre, Bickers Island, Boston and Proper Bays, while further testing into brevetoxin levels is conducted.

The company says levels detected remain below the food safety threshold, but precautions have been taken due to the delay between sampling and results.

A statement attributed to CEO David Wood says Yumbah takes no risks with food safety, and the suspension is expected to last at least four weeks.

Mr. Wood says the impact of the harmful algal bloom on SA fisheries is unprecedented and well known and they urge government to work closely with the industry on a coordinated and rapid response.

He says there’s no risk to any Yumbah mussels already sold or currently in the market and the company will continue to supply mussels from their Victorian operations.
