Local residents living with a severe form of psoriasis may have access to a new treatment option through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme from this month.

Psoriasis affects more than half a million Australians and presents as inflamed, red and scaly patches of skin.

People living with the condition often fear social rejection with 1 in 3 patients experiencing depression or anxiety.

Director of Research at the Skin Health Institute, Associate Professor Peter Foley, says the listing for Otelza will come as welcome news for many patients.
