Eyre Peninsula fishers are being asked to volunteer to be part of a cutting-edge national research project to accurately estimate the number of recreational fishers and their catch.

The project, run by SARDI (The South Australian Research and Development Institute) in partnership with the University of Tasmania is designed to capture more accurate data around how many recreational fishers there are and how much they catch to help define bag limits, along with ensuring sustainable, long term management of South Australian Fisheries.

Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development David Basham said that "The more data we have, the more confident we will be to adopt bigger bag limits.” he also noted "Recreational fishing is incredibly important to South Australia as we know it contributes over $160 million to our state every year"

From March, the SA Recreational Fishing Survey will be available for all recreational fishers through the SA Fishing smartphone app.

Local anglers are encouraged to participate by filling out the survey app whenever they go fishing.
