Committee to Hear from Local Aquaculture Groups

A parliamentary committee will hear from local aquaculture industry groups today, as part of its inquiry into the sector.

The committee will hear from a number of key industry groups representing operators in the southern regions, and inquire on current status and the opportunities and barriers to the expansion of the aquaculture sector. 

CEO for the Australian Southern Bluefin Tuna Industry Association, Brian Jeffriess says aquaculture is one of the fastest growing industries in the world.

He says he would like to see what the Commonwealth can do to encourage the best technology to migrate to Australia. 

"That means encouraging overseas entrepenuers to develop Australian fisheries and aquaculture in a way that haven't been done before," he said.

"For example, there's been some takeovers by overseas companies who will bring better technology, and in the end that will ensure both prosperity and sustainability."
