Research Finds More Genetically Distinct Snapper Populations

New Flinders University research on snapper has revealed there are more genetically distinct populations in the Western parts of Australia than previously thought.


The research uncovered three different oceanic snapper populations between Ceduna and Shark Bay in WA, using a genomic dataset of over 10,000 DNA markers.

Genetically distinct snapper populations form when there is limited movement and interbreeding between groups in different geographical areas, with researchers finding the west coast of SA is home to genetically distinct snapper populations to the two in WA.

The results are now being discussed by fisheries scientists and managers to improve snapper management across Western Australia.
