Yesterday afternoon, the Whyalla jetty caught fire after a worker was welding and materials were set to light which then saw the fire spread along the jetty.
The man quickly jumped into the water with an inflatable life jacket, however, the current was too strong for the man to swim away from the jetty.
A nearby police officer in Whyalla for training saw the man in distress and swam out to help and bring him back to shore.
The blaze took firefighters 30 minutes to extinguish the flames, thankfully no one was injured during the incident.
Fortunately, the jetty is due to be demolished in the coming months to make way for the council’s plans to build a new jetty.
