Regional Illicit Drug Consumption Hit Highest Records

A new report reveals Australia's consumption of stimulants such as methylamphetamine, cocaine and MDMA is among the highest in the world.

Latest figures from the National Wastewater Monitoring Program show nicotine and alcohol remain the most-consumed drugs, while methylamphetamine is the top illicit substance.

Shane Neilson from the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission says the data shows consumption has hit record levels, particularly in regional and rural areas.

“With the exception of heroin and cocaine regional consumptions of drugs monitored by the program exceeds capital city consumption, regional consumptions of MDMA cocaine, alcohol and nicotine was the highest recorded by the program.” Said Neilson.
