It’s been announced that the Lower Eyre Peninsula Sports Person of the Year Awards have been cancelled for 2020 following a collective decision by the organising committee and Bendigo Bank Port Lincoln Branch.
The decision to cancel this year’s awards was due to the health and safety concerns and restrictions surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic,
Darren Allard from the Sports Person of the Year Awards Organising Committee says the pandemic had a significant impact on limiting local sport played this year.
“There are two reasons we chose not to go ahead and one of those reasons is because the lack of sport being played so we’re not going to have enough nominations and the second, is because we don’t know where restrictions will be at by then so it makes it very difficult to plan a dinner and know if we will be able to go ahead with it or not.
“It is difficult to predict COVID restrictions that may still be in place next year and we need to ensure we can hold the event in a COVID-19 safe way under the public health orders in place at the time.
“Until that time, we can only look forward to getting back to life and sport post-COVID-19 as soon as it is safe to do so.” Said Mr. Allard.
