Residents on the Eyre Peninsula are being urged to know about automatic defibrillators and how they could help save a life during a cardiac arrest.

Automatic defibrillators (AEDs) are often found in public places such as shopping centres, schools and gyms but nearly 1 in 3 Australians have never heard of the lifesaving device.

More than 1 in 2 people (52%) say they wouldn't feel confident using an AED with some fearing they'd cause greater harm to the patient.

However Bill Stavreski from the Heart Foundation says they're surprisingly easy to use and only deliver an electric shock if necessary.
