It looks like Hogwarts has found its new, incredibly vain Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Superman and Mad Max: Fury Road star Nicholas Hoult has officially been cast as the flamboyant Professor Gilderoy Lockhart in the highly anticipated second season of HBO’s Harry Potter television series.

Fans of the wizarding world will remember Lockhart as a central figure in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. On paper, he is a famous wizard known for documenting his heroic acts in best-selling books. In reality? He is wildly arrogant and entirely unqualified for his new teaching post at Hogwarts. Kenneth Branagh famously brought the charming fraud to life in the 2002 film adaptation, and now Hoult is stepping into the glittering robes to put his own spin on the character.

The HBO series is shaping up to be a massive holiday event. The first season, which adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is set to debut on December 25 on HBO and HBO Max. While Hoult is currently busy shooting the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, in Atlanta, he will soon trade his superhero scripts for spell books when filming for the second season kicks off later this year.

With Jon Brown and Francesca Gardiner taking the reins as co-showrunners for the second season, it seems the series is moving full steam ahead. Are you ready to see Nicholas Hoult flash that famous five-time Witch Weekly’s Most-Charming-Smile?
