A hike up the UK’s highest mountain turned into a major rescue operation after a Labrador suddenly became seriously unwell on the trail.
Five-year-old black Labrador Tokyo was climbing Ben Nevis in Scotland with owner Christina Bluhme when the dog began losing balance and struggling to walk. As the situation worsened, Tokyo eventually became unable to continue, prompting a call for help.
The family had already spent hours making their way up the mountain when weather conditions deteriorated. Rain moved in, temperatures dropped and concerns grew for the dog’s safety. With Tokyo unable to walk, getting the 25-kilogram Labrador back down the rugged terrain became nearly impossible without assistance.
Fortunately, members of the volunteer Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team were already on the mountain after responding to another incident. Rescuers placed Tokyo in a stretcher and quickly carried her down the steep and slippery track to waiting veterinary care.
Veterinarians later suspected the Labrador had consumed cannabis that had been discarded along the trail. While the experience was frightening for everyone involved, Tokyo made a full recovery the following day.
The incident has prompted a reminder for pet owners to remain vigilant during outdoor adventures. Experts note that dogs can be particularly vulnerable to cannabis exposure, with symptoms including loss of balance, lethargy and difficulty standing.
For Tokyo and her family, what started as an ordinary mountain adventure ended with a dramatic rescue and a valuable reminder that unexpected hazards can sometimes be found even in the most scenic locations.
